Jason Hellewell Memories

Jason's Music

Jason was an accomplished musician, almost entirely self-taught. On these pages you'll find links to his music creations and compilations, along with other musical information. These are just a few of his compositions; we'll be adding more as we discover more of his work on his computers.

 Into My Arms

The song "Into My Arms" is a 'cover' (adaptation) from Nick Cave that Jason recorded in 2005. Jason does the vocals, along with the accompaniments. This, like many of his other songs, was done almost entirely on his computer, using midi instruments and music composition software. It's part of the "Automation Immortalis" collection, but we like it so much that we put it here separately.

 Automation Immortalis

Jason's notes about this project:

"For my next big solo work (under the name Automaton Immortalis), I’ve started writing all new material from scratch.  I’ve devised a new compositional method that is working pretty well so far.  I won’t be sharing any of it for a while, because my method involves multiple revisions.  I will be working on all of these songs at the same time (sort of), and they will all be completed roughly at the same time. Within the span of a week or two if all goes well.  It will take a while, but I’m very confident in my new method.  "   (November 24, 2005)

"Automaton Immortalis is the current name for my solo work. I often attempt to subtly bend genres in instrumental tracks with styles ranging from electronic, industrial, new age, blip-hop, space-hop, and noise. My home network of PCs has become the canvas for my self-produced music, using various sound mangling software, a sequencer, soft-synths, samplers, effects, and a collection of midi controlling hardware (ie. Keyboards, wind controller, midi guitar, and drums).  Most of my previous works are available on this page for free in a low resolution mp3 format. Eventually I will be putting together a collection of some of my favorite works in the DVD-audio format (with high resolution 5.1 surround sound), as well as the standard CD format, for distribution.

"My main focus right now, is to continue working on my new full length album.  In a way, it will be a concept album.  I won’t provide any details for now, since there is still plenty of room for revision. I have developed a new non-liner compositional method that I will be using for my new material.  It will also be mixed in 5.1 surround sound for the optional DVD-audio format, and it will be written and designed specifically for this format.  I will not be posting any new material on here until the entire album is complete. But sit tight.  I intend to exceed expectations, so be prepared for a sonic journey through space and time. Lend me your ears and I’ll show you my mind."   (from his website page)

Selections

 Artificial Space Gods

This collection of songs is from mid 2004. Jason's notes about this project, originally titled as "Space Opera":

"For starters, the Space Opera (still unofficially titled) has been my #1 focus right now. Steve and I have been working on some new material for the project, but it is still in it's early stages. We are still outlining themes, figuring out structure, and coming up with the lyrics and dialogs/monologs . We know the concept we are shooting for and we want to make it work perfectly before we start hammering out final recordings. Right now I'm not giving any details as to what our themes or concepts for our music will be, since we are always subject to change..It will involve the universe, space travel, and manimatronics. The main technical idea behind the Space Opera will be that it is going to be mixed in surround sound. When it is completed we plan on performing it in surround. This idea is our motivation to get the project moving forward. I have already mixed 4 instrumental tracks to experiment with and I am very happy to say that it is working out exactly as I planned. When we are ready to post samples of the Space Opera, they will only be in stereo (obviously). I Expect to post one or two new tracks in the next few weeks, whether they are completed or not. I can say, the Space Opera will be THE project to give Manimatronic Records public recognition. Until this project is finished we won't be doing any promoting what-so-ever. The Space Opera will come like a "thief in the night." heh heh! So stay tuned...."   (July 20, 2004)

Selections

 Dante's Inferno Demos

These selections are dated about April 2005. Jason's notes:

This is our most current, and most ambitious project to date. It will be based, as accurately as possible, on Dante’s Inferno.   (from Jason's web site)

(Notes from Jason's web site about the Jam session)  The jam session was one of our first practice sessions, where we were trying to get a feel for the direction of a particular section of the Inferno story. It will not be used in the Inferno since it was an improv session. It’s mood only reflects one section of the story, so the rest of the project will change dramatically and sound differently as it progresses (or digresses). The jam session includes Josh on lead guitar, Cody on rhythm/noise guitar, Danny on Bass, and Sohrab on Drums.  I was not involved in playing during the jam session because I was busy monitoring the recording and adjusting levels.  As soon as I get my 2nd computer in working order, you will be able to hear some of my real-time noise tweaking talents, background ambience, and synthesized accompaniment.

 Miscellaneous Tracks

I haven't found any notes on these tracks. They seem to date from the last half of 2003.
